QR Code Safety: How to Scan Links Without Taking Unnecessary Risks

QR codes are convenient, but a scan can open a website or trigger an action you should review first. Use these simple checks before entering credentials, making payments or downloading files.

Understand what a QR scan can do

A QR code can encode text, contact details, Wi-Fi information or a URL. When it contains a web link, scanning it may open a page in your browser. The visual pattern alone does not prove that the destination is trustworthy, so treat the resulting link like any other link you receive.

Scanning a code is not the same as verifying its owner. A legitimate-looking poster, package or sticker can be copied or altered.

Inspect the destination before opening

When your camera shows a link preview, read the domain carefully before tapping it. Watch for misspellings, extra words, unfamiliar subdomains and look-alike characters. A padlock or HTTPS connection protects the connection to a site; it does not prove that the site itself is honest.

If a QR code claims to belong to a bank, delivery company or government service, consider opening the organization’s known official app or typing its known address yourself instead of relying on the code.

Recognize suspicious QR placements

Be cautious with unexpected stickers placed over a business’s original code, QR codes sent with urgent payment demands, or signs that offer a prize but ask for sensitive information. If a code is on a public payment terminal, parking meter or restaurant table, check that it appears to be part of the original, undamaged display.

When in doubt, ask staff or use the business’s official website to confirm the correct destination.

Be careful with payments and logins

Do not enter passwords, one-time codes, card details or personal information simply because a QR code opened a convincing page. Check the domain and purpose first. Before approving a payment, confirm the recipient and amount in the payment app itself.

A QR code should not pressure you to bypass normal security checks. If a page asks you to install an unknown app, download an unexpected file or disable security protections, stop and verify independently.

Create safer QR codes for your audience

If you publish QR codes for customers, use a domain you control, keep destination pages updated and describe the action clearly beside the code. For example, say “Open the menu” or “View product instructions” rather than using a vague “Scan now.” Avoid encoding unnecessary personal data directly in the symbol.

Test the printed code and destination before distribution. If you use analytics or redirect services, review their privacy practices and disclose tracking where required.

What to do if you scanned a suspicious code

If you only opened a page and did not enter information, close it and avoid further interaction. If you entered a password, change it through the service’s official site or app and enable multi-factor authentication where available. If you provided payment details or approved a suspicious transaction, contact your bank or payment provider promptly.

For a work device, follow your organization’s security reporting process. Keep a record of the suspicious message or location if it is safe to do so, and report altered codes to the venue or service owner.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to scan any QR code?

No. QR codes can open untrusted websites or encode misleading information. Review the destination and treat it like any other link.

Does HTTPS mean a QR destination is safe?

No. HTTPS encrypts the connection, but scam websites can also use HTTPS. Check the domain and the reason the page is asking for information.

What should a business put beside its QR code?

Use a clear description of the destination or action, such as “View the menu” or “Open setup instructions,” and provide an alternative for people who cannot scan it.
